learn everything you need to
know about the process of
consulting in the public sector.
From setting up the business,
to stakeholder consultations, to
analysis and report writing AND
I see too many people who have what it takes to be a successful consultant give up their dream of being their own boss and go back to employment. I don't want that to be you.
Take my consultant self-evaluation quiz – it will help you to pinpoint where you’re doing well currently and what areas you’re struggling with, so you can focus on addressing the right things to help turn your business around.
You have a solid public or community service sector career behind you, and a wealth of skills and experience, but you’re struggling to translate that into a
successful consulting business.
You’re unsure how to package your expertise and experience into a consulting package which attracts clients…and ‘FOMO’ [fear of missing out] means you’re trying to appeal to everybody rather than identify a consulting niche and associated service offering.
Things got off to a really good start and your first few projects came through existing contacts, but now things have slowed down [or even stalled]; but you’re totally uncomfortable with the idea of marketing yourself and don't know where to start.
Your success rate with consultancy proposals is very hit and miss and you’re just not winning enough competitive bids.
You consistently underestimate project scope and underquote; as a result you’re working a lot of unpaid days.
You thought moving from employment to consulting would be a pretty seamless move, but you realise it's a completely different ball game; there is just so much to learn and you regularly feel out of your depth and outside your comfort zone.
You hadn’t anticipated how isolated you would feel working for yourself and are struggling without collegiate support.
If you answered yes to any of these, then it’s likely that you’re starting to doubt yourself
and maybe even wondering if you’ve made the right move.
I get it. I understand your pain points. And I can help you get back on track.
I’m on a mission to develop the next generation of excellent public sector consultants. Because although we are now operating our own small business, we are still paid for by the public purse. So that comes with a big responsibility – and we need to be very, very good at what we do.
I also know that the rewards from consulting are potentially huge and it is entirely possible to build the lifestyle you want through being your own boss. But a lot of people struggle in those first couple of years, and without expert advice and support, ultimately their business fails and they end up back on the employment treadmill.
I know that you're already an expert in your field and that you bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the consulting role. But the transition from employment to consulting can be tough and for all of us there is a learning curve. Why not let me help make that transition a bit easier so you can avoid costly mistakes, increase your confidence and fast track your success.
Meet Jacq HacketT
Hi – I’m Jacq Hackett and following a career in the public and community services sector here in Australia, I started my consulting business in 2000 and have never looked back. Here’s my story about how I got started.
When I started out I had a wonderful mentor. It made my journey to success quicker, more profitable and less stressful. And it allowed me to build a solid reputation that means these days, 80% of all my consulting projects come from repeat clients and referral business. And even better, 90% of my business is uncontested, so I’m not competing with other consultants.
But I know that most people are not as fortunate as I was when I started out and many struggle to find support, professional development and advice to ensure they build a sustainable business.
So now it’s my turn to pass on what I know.
I’m known for helping public sector consultants in their first couple of years in business to get started on the right track, win more consulting projects and hone their consulting skills. I provide a roadmap to success as a public sector consultant so they can have the lifestyle, income and career that they desire.
But don't just take my word for it – check out what other consultants have to say about the
difference my online programs have made to them and how they have helped to transform their consulting business.
Solo Consultant Launchpad
"While my consultancy had been active, it was starting to slow down and I wanted tips on how to attract new clients. By making my capability statement and niche market more specific, I received 6 responses, a referral and a new project. I would encourage anyone in the first one to two years of their new consultancy to undertake Solo Consultant Launchpad."
Judith Neville [Judith Neville Consulting]
Expertly developed, well written, practical course that provides excellent guidance to someone new to consulting. Solo Consultant Launchpad would also be of great benefit to someone already in consulting who feels they need to refocus their consulting business. Do the course and your business will see the benefits.
Maureen Hanly, Independent Health Consultant
"This course is a godsend! While I had full confidence in the experience and abilities gained from my (government) career, I had NO idea how to translate these into a profitable consultancy business. Jacq’s course provided everything I needed… Solo Consultant Launchpad is the best investment I made as I set up my solo consulting business and I highly recommend it."

Project Winning Proposals
"As a new consultant starting out, the prospect of having to win business to generate my own income pre-occupied me the most and seemed daunting. Although I was confident I had lots to offer, marketing and winning business were things I didn’t have to think about in my previous job and so didn’t come naturally to me. I knew that in order to succeed and realise my goal of being my own boss this was something I needed to get on top of and fast.
Where do I look for work and how should I approach that marketing thing? And, when I actually get that opportunity to pitch, how do I make sure I address the client’s needs, and develop an effective proposal that both wins me the job and ensures I actually make money? My biggest fear was failing to overcome these challenges.
Project Winning Proposals really helped to minimise the anxiety by breaking the process down into very clear and practical steps that completely demystified the task. Jacq’s guidance on the resources for identifying public sector work, how to use your network, and develop successful proposals were invaluable. It armed me with the knowledge and confidence I needed to overcome my fears and win my first job.
Fast forward two years, and I’m still doing this consulting thing so I guess I must be doing something right. While the process of generating work will never come as easy to me as the doing part, it’s comforting to know that I can always refer back to Jacq’s guidance whenever I need a hand to brush up my skills and develop that winning proposal."
Steve Vlahos – IPI Consulting
"With absolutely no experience in writing a consultancy proposal, Project Winning Proposals provided a detailed, accurate pathway for me to follow. The examples, templates and checklists were invaluable and enabled me to produce a professional document that, in the absence of this guidance, would have been severely wanting.
I wasn’t at all confident when quoting, so I appreciated how supportive and effective Jacq is in conveying how to best approach every challenge. I loved the frank discussion, direct approach and detailed explanation of how to accurately assess time and costs – it gave me an enormous advantage as I started out, allowing me to submit a professional project plan I would have otherwise had no idea about."

Solo Consultant Masterclass
"I was fortunate enough to do the Solo Consultant Masterclass a couple of years into establishing my consultancy business, but how I wish I had completed it when I was just starting out. It would have saved me a lot of stress, uncertainty, bewilderment and I suspect money!
I feel like Jacq must have been inside my world (and possibly in my head) when she developed this Masterclass. She has answered every single question I have ever had in navigating the consultancy minefield and has answered many more questions I did not even know I needed to ask.
I love the fact that this masterclass has given me tangible, actionable and completely relevant information that will (and has already) make a difference to not only getting the right kind of work but also ensuring the consultancy project runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
I think I have possibly changed or at least tweaked nearly everything I do as a consultant as a result of having completed this Masterclass; the gems of wisdom and the practical easy to implement advice have made such a positive impact on my consulting business – thank you Jacq"
Blythe O’Hara – Blythe O’Hara Consulting
"I found the Solo Consultant Masterclass invaluable as someone starting out. I’ve spent more than 15 years in senior government policy and project roles. The 15 modules in this Master Class are a veritable treasure trove of information, particularly in unfamiliar areas and possible pitfalls one faces working as a consultant. But there were even things I learnt about areas in which I already had long experience. Jacq Hackett has distilled 17 years of experience into sound, accessible, and practical advice. Couple this with the generous addition of tools and templates, and you have an indispensable resource."
